If you are in the process of looking for a wedding photographer, chances are you will soon here the terms: medium format, 35mm, and digital. Those are the three primary types of camera systems currently used by wedding photographers. We, the wedding photographers, have argued amongst ourselves for years as to which camera system is best. The goal of this article is to share information about these types of camera systems and the possible impact they may have on your wedding photographer decision. Medium Format For many years medium format has been the absolute best option. A medium format camera uses film that is 3 times the size of a 35mm negative-- resulting in higher resolution images and beautiful enlargements, however, the cameras and processing costs are very expensive. Primary advantages: high resolution negatives. Previously, the fact that a person owned a Medium Format camera was almost, in and of itself, a sign that they were a true "wedding photographer" (due to the expense of the system). Disadvantages: expensive to operate (film costs are so high that some wedding photography books encourage medium format photographers to limit the photos they take); film can be lost or damaged during processing; slower to focus and operate. 35mm For many years 35mm has had a bad reputation for providing poor quality enlargements -- especially when compared to medium format. However, over the past 10 years the quality of 35mm film has improved tremendously. It is now a common format used by many professional photographers, especially those who use the photojournalistic style and shoot close to a thousand or more images on a wedding day. Primary advantages to 35mm: fast (easy to quickly focus and shoot during), much improved quality of enlargements (many people would have a hard time telling the difference between a 35mm and medium format 8x10 enlargement). Disadvantages: processing film is becoming more and more expensive, and film can be damaged or loss during processing.. Many photographers that shoot film are now having the negatives scanned so that the files become a digital file. Digital Professional digital wedding photography has been a viable option since about the year 2000 (although some would argue that date). The quality of digital cameras has now reached a point where many photographers feel the quality rivals, or even beats, medium format negatives. In fact, many digital wedding photographers used to shoot medium format. Primary digital advantages: instant review of images on the back of the camera; no film and processing costs (although the savings is offset by the additional computer time required to process the digital images); more control over the images (i.e., a slight rotation or cropping of an image is quick and easy with digital but requires a custom print from 35mm or medium format). Disadvantages: technology changes rapidly over time and cameras soon are outdated (although this doesn't necessarily effect you, as the consumer). Memory cards are easier to lose than rolls of film (if your wedding photographer uses a digital camera, ask them how they make sure the photos arrive safely back at the studio). In summary: No matter what you have been told - all three formats can be a viable method for wedding photography. Some might be more expensive than others, but they all can produce good results. Many photographers use several of the camera systems. Some might use medium format for the formals but 35mm for the reception and ceremony coverage. Others will primarily shoot digital, but might bring film cameras as backup equipment. My advice to prospective brides: before signing a contract with a photographer, ask to see sample enlargements that were taken with the same equipment that would be used at your wedding. For years I have purchased soy milk, stocked it on my shelf, told myself I should open it and include it into my diet. After opening it though, it just sits in the refrigerator for a month or two. Then, of course, it’s too old to drink, so I throw it down the sink and the cycle repeats itself a couple months later. Now I believe that my body was telling me that it didn’t want the soy milk as I’ve been reading up on the soy controversy lately. Here is a summary of that information. . . Isoflavones—the estrogen-like hormones that all work to help you stay young and healthy may not be the magical food that you have been led to believe. Soy is just one example of the many fad foods/ supplements/ cures that I find myself exposed to in trying to decipher the long-term health benefits before sharing them with my clients. Soy has been marketed as a health food when, at one time, it was only a toxic by-product of the vegetable oil industry. Hmm. . . .that doesn’t sound right, does it? Don’t we eat soy in lots of things now? Advances in technology make it possible to produce Soy Protein Isolate (SPI) from what was once considered a waste product—defatted, high-protein soy chips—transforming something that looks and smells terrible into products that can be consumed by human beings. Flavorings, preservatives, sweeteners, emulsifiers and synthetic nutrients have turned SPI, the food processors' nightmare into a very lucrative business. All soybean producers pay a mandatory assessment of one-half to one per cent of the net market price of soybeans. The total—something like $80 million annually—supports United Soybean's program (http://www.ams.usda.gov/lsg/mpb/rp-soy.htm) to "strengthen the position of soybeans in the marketplace and maintain and expand domestic and foreign markets for soybeans and soybean products." Soy milk, made from raw soy, has posted the biggest gains, soaring from $2 million in 1980 to $300 million in the United States last year. Recent advances in processing have transformed the gray, thin, bitter, beany-tasting beverage into a product that Western consumers will accept. The first soy foods were fermented products like tempeh, natto, miso and soy sauce. At a later date, possibly in the 2nd century BC, Chinese scientists discovered that a purée of cooked soybeans could be precipitated with calcium sulfate or magnesium sulfate (Plaster of Paris or Epsom salts) to make a smooth, pale curd they called tofu or bean curd. The Chinese never ate unfermented soybeans as they did other legumes such as lentils, because the soybean contains large quantities of natural toxins or "antinutrients." These antinutrients are not completely deactivated during ordinary cooking. They can produce serious gastric distress, reduced protein digestion and chronic deficiencies in amino acid uptake. In test animals, diets high in these antinutrients called trypsin inhibitors cause enlargement and pathological conditions of the pancreas, including cancer. Other harmful substances in soy products include haemagglutinin, goitrogens, phytic acid, nitrates, and phytoestrogens (in large amounts.) What are these things? Well. . . Haemagglutinin is a clot-promoting substance that causes red blood cells to clump together. Trypsin inhibitors and haemagglutinin are growth inhibitors that are deactivated during the process of fermentation. In precipitated products (like tofu,) enzyme inhibitors concentrate in the soaking liquid rather than in the curd. Thus, in tofu and bean curd, growth depressants are reduced in quantity but not completely eliminated. Soy also contains goitrogens - substances that depress thyroid function. This is a major concern of mine as I see our population having more and more thyroid issues with each passing year. Soybeans are also high in phytic acid, present in the bran or hulls of all seeds. Phytic acid can block the uptake of essential minerals—calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and especially zinc—in the intestinal tract. Scientists are in general agreement that grain and legume-based diets high in phytates contribute to widespread mineral deficiencies in third world countries. The Japanese have traditionally eaten small amounts of tofu or miso as part of a mineral-rich fish broth, followed by a serving of meat or fish. This is not how vegetarians and vegans consume soy. The results of calcium, magnesium and iron deficiency are well known; those of zinc are less so. These are the exact mineral deficiencies I have been seeing in my practice. Many people in my practice now come in with that tell-tale tan chin, indicative of iron deficiency. They are low in energy and worried about osteoporosis, but they look like thyroid cases. Their thumbs point toward their hips as they stand and walk instead of pointing forward, and they carry more weight evenly dispersed on their body. Most of my clients are also low in zinc. Zinc is needed for optimal development and functioning of the brain and nervous system, it is used in protein synthesis, collagen formation, in the blood-sugar control mechanism thus protecting against diabetes, and is needed for a healthy reproductive system. Zinc is a key component in numerous vital enzymes and plays a role in healthy immune system function These uses are among hundreds of other ways zinc is used by the body. Soy processors have worked hard to get these antinutrients out of the finished product, particularly soy protein isolate (SPI), the key ingredient in most soy foods that imitate meat and dairy products, including baby formulas and some brands of soy milk. Nitrites, which are potent carcinogens, are formed during the spray-drying process of making Soy Protein Isolate (SPI). Test animals fed SPI develop enlarged organs, particularly the pancreas and thyroid gland, and increased deposition of fatty acids in the liver. If this is so, then why are SPI and textured vegetable protein used extensively in school lunch programs, commercial baked goods, diet beverages and fast food products? (Yikes!) Soy is also heavily promoted in third world countries and forms the basis of many food giveaway programs. Researchers studying soy-based foods in one school research project noted several alarming symptoms after children ate soy-based meals including: "occasional" vomiting, periods of moderate diarrhea, upper respiratory infections, rashes and fever. Many ask then, why do the Japanese have less cancer than Americans? Do they? I’ve heard over the years that the Japanese, who allegedly eat 30 times as much soy as North Americans, have a lower incidence of cancers of the breast, uterus and prostate. BUT the Japanese, and Asians in general, have much higher rates of other types of cancer; particularly cancer of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, thyroid and liver. Just how much soy do Asians really eat? A Cornell study conducted by Colin T. Campbell in 1998 found that the average daily amount of soy protein consumed in Japan was about eight grams for men, and seven for women. This is only less than two teaspoons. Do Japanese really eat more soy than Americans? At this point, I don’t think so. Except in times of famine, Asians consume soy products only in small amounts, as condiments—not as a replacement for animal foods—with one exception. Celibate monks living in monasteries and leading a vegetarian lifestyle find soy foods quite helpful—because they dampen libido. So what are the side-effects of too much soy? In 1991, Japanese researchers reported that consumption of as little as 30 grams or two tablespoons of soybeans per day for only one month resulted in a significant increase in thyroid-stimulating hormone, and 100 grams of soy protein, (promoted for its bone-building isoflavones and cholesterol-lowering effects) contains the estrogenic equivalent of the Pill. In vitro studies suggest that isoflavones inhibit synthesis of estradiol and other steroid hormones. I wonder if it’s really safe to take this kind of supplement if you have a family history of estrogen-influenced breast cancer. I don’t think I’d chance it. We get enough xenoestrogens in our environment as it is. With Merkal in West Germany being pragmatic by pushing through benefit reforms and the big German companies pushing the unions to agree new conditions in exchange for jobs to remain in Germany and respond to Globalisation by moving production to low cost Eastern European or Asian countries. These conditions covered both working practices and redundancy benefits payable. In Germany it appears to be working, with the increase in output and the only country in socialist Europe. Now it’s the turn of France and the French have to look at Germany and see the changes they need to implement. Royal [1] is very likeable and it would be interesting to see the second largest European country with a female President. Can Merkal be the model for Royal to follow and therefore change to being a right wing socialist. The French have to wake up and see that Globalisation is something they must respond to if they are going to survive and not set the other socialist countries of Europe down the wrong road. The enlargement of the European Union [2] with the Eastern European countries will for them be an easy change from communist to socialist. The problem now is that their move to Western Europe will cause earlier immigrants and part-time low cost British workers to lose out to them accepting low wages. But when they stay it will turn and they will seek hire wages, the problem is how long will this take ! in India about two to three decades, now that the Rupe is level with the US dollar. More drain on the UK benefit system will make it collapse. In the European Union there are more socialist countries and governments than conservative or right wing socialist and we now have the mainly Washington DC neo-cons trying to change views throughout the Europe. At least with Germany as the model the rest can hopefully be led. Without change the European Union will be dragged down by the non-producing member countries, like the recent new members. France will have to face Globalisation [3] and change like Germany and not be like most of Europe and try to protect themselves from China and India and other Asian countries. The recent article on Globalisation covers some very hard points and should make everybody in Europe sit up and think about how they are going to survive. European countries without change are now facing very hard times. In the UK demographics have made the government bring in a anti-age law to prevent employers from rejecting older workers and try to ease the skills shortage and is a form of response to Globalisation. Under the labour government socialist reforms have to stop and the unions have to face up to changes like those in Germany, although they are weaker in the UK, they are strong with government employees and transport and telecommunications employees. But that is changing and e-Government is marching forward. The Internet is now the Globalisation tool allowing people to work from any location in the world that telecommunications and satellites allow. Its also the tool of change and will be the driving force for that and enable debate on issues that now affect all of us in the World [4]. Penile Implants These are the most irreversible and drastic ways of achieving artificial erection. Only when all other measures have been exhausted with no longer-lasting effects are achieved is that penile implants are warranted. These are prosthetic devices made of inert silicone, which are surgically inserted into the penis. Normal erection cannot be achieved after that. There are two kinds of penile implants: Passive Implants: Two rods of silicone are inserted into the penis, which remains erect all the time. The silicone rods can be put in different angles, but this may be an embarrassment in public occasions such as swimming. Orgasm may be achieved unless there are hormonal or neural factors which impede it. Active Implants: These are inflatable silicone pouches which are also implanted into the penis. The penis remains in flaccid state until a proper manipulation of the prosthesis causes its inflation and consequent erection. One type of implant is activated by pressing the glans (the head of the penis) with one hand. Liquid is transferred from a reservoir to the main inflatable pouches. In another type, the liquid reservoir is implanted into the scrotal sac, and can be pumped by hand. Other Treatments Other surgical and non-surgical treatments for impotence are being tried in an experimental basis, and there may be a promising future for some of them. For instance, groups of physicians in Russia and Germany have been experimenting with electrical stimulation of the pelvic area using an external pad applied to the abdomen and back. There are already commercial devices using this principle, which seems to increase the blood flow in the genital area. Direct stimulation of pelvic nerves (leading to a nerve-induced erection) by using implanted electrodes and an electrical pacemaker-like device are also being considered. "Natural" or alternative methods do abound. They range from "natural" foods which have high testosterone or DHEA levels, such as green oats (marketed under the brand name of SEXATIVA) or saw palmetto; to yoga exercises to increase muscle tone and blood flow in the genital area. It is hard to say whether there are real effects or they are just the effect of suggestion or placebo phenomena. One thing has been scientifically determined, however. The blood levels of testosterone increase just after exercise, or by loosing excessive weight. Thus, a natural way of combating mild hypogonadism might be frequent exercising and keeping a normal weight. Controversial and unapproved treatments Controversial and unapproved treatments Bremelanotide The experimental drug Bremelanotide (formerly PT-141) does not act on the vascular system like the former compounds but increases sexual desire and drive in male as well as female. It is applied as a nasal spray. Bremelanotide works by activating melanocortin receptors in the brain. It is currently in Phase IIb trials. Ginseng A double-blind study appears to show evidence that ginseng is better than placebo: see the ginseng article for links and more details. Enzyte Enzyte is a product that has been advertised by saturation coverage on television channels such as Court-TV. However, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) about Enzyte for deceptive advertising. It is manufactured by Berkeley Nutritionals, which is alleged to be the subject of an investigation by the Attorney General of Ohio and the defendant in class-action lawsuits. Enzyte is a supplement that claims to increase the male libido or frequency of erections of the penis. Commercials for Enzyte are shown regularly on television. These commercials feature a man named Bob who never stops smiling, apparently because he had taken Enzyte and improved the size of his sex organs. The commercials are riddled with symbolic phallic imagery, e.g. golf clubs, remarkably tall glasses of iced tea, and a hose spraying barely a trickle of water (carried by someone who doesn't use Enzyte). The effectiveness of Enzyte is in dispute. Some medical professionals in fact advise against taking Enzyte, saying that it can lead to damage. The Center for Science in the Public Interest have urged the Federal Trade Commission to disallow further television advertising for Enzyte due to a lack of proper studies supporting claims. Enzyte maker Berkeley Premium Nutraceuticals, Inc., is currently under a class action lawsuit for false advertising. Enzyte is said to contain: Tribulus terrestris; Yohimbe Extract; Niacin; Epimedium; Avena sativa; Zinc Oxide; Maca; Muira Pauma; Ginkgo biloba; L-Arginine; Saw Palmetto. Other ingredients: gelatin, rice bran, oat fiber, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide. Herbal and other alternative treatments These are generally ineffective when tested blind, but may be useful for their psychological (placebo) effect: if a good result is expected, any highly-praised, and often expensive, treatment can be effective. Reputable drugs can also benefit from the same effect. Uncontroversial treatments for erectile dysfunction PDE5 Inhibitors The prescription PDE5 inhibitors sildenafil (Viagra®), vardenafil (Levitra®) and tadalafil (Cialis®) are prescription drugs which are taken orally. They work by blocking the action of PDE5, which causes cGMP to degrade. cGMP causes the smooth muscle of the arteries in the penis to relax, allowing the corpus cavernosum to fill with blood. Vacuum pump An external vacuum pump will produce an engorged penis with success approaching 90%; a penis ring will maintain this state, although it should be removed after not more than 30 minutes. The erection is not as rigid or hard as a natural erection; drugs or injections, when they work, may be preferable. Various studies show the degree of satisfaction of users and their partners to be vary variable, even when drugs and injections do not work; in one study, about 20% of men who tried a (high-priced) pump decided to proceed to purchase one. Other studies show higher percentages of satisfied users. In some cases frequent use of a vacuum pump can eventually improve the degree of erection attainable without use of the pump. Claims of cheap "penis pumps" to permanently increase maximum penis size should be viewed with caution, however. Some vacuum pumps are sold at a higher price with 100% refund within 90 days to dissatisfied users, with a somewhat lower price with 50% refund guarantee (Osbon Erecaid, [7]). This pump is supported by medical insurance schemes, including the UK's NHS and US Medicare and private insurers. The better-known pumps sell for prices of around 200 GBP/400 USD (2006). There is at least one vacuum pump with rings which sells for around one-fifth of this price (Noogleberry, [8]). Penis curvature is one of those unpleasant problems plaguing men, filling them with anxiety and driving away peace of mind. A visible curve in the penis is bound to make any man less eager to take down his pants in front of a lady. What if she starts laughing? What if she recoils from it? Nobody likes to be seen as a freak or as something to be laughed about. Although the man in question is in no way responsible for this problem, others can’t help but see this as a failure or as a dubious physical feature. On the other hand, some men are actually proud of their special look. A curved penis serves to underscore a rebellious or outré personality that refuses to bow to tradition. Moreover, a bent penis can be very desirable for women, too, because the curve allows the head of the penis to rub against areas not normally touched by a straight penis. Thus, it may be said that a special penis is not seen as a liability in certain circles. However, one should weigh carefully the pros and cons of a curved penis because most women still prefer a straight, normal-looking penis over a bent one. Curvatures are caused either by the natural growth of the penis or by a condition knows as Peyronie’s disease. The natural curvature occurs when the two chambers of the penis develop at different rates through the years, thus bending the penis toward the slower developing chamber. There is no way that such a natural development tendency can be forecast and prevented, although it can be corrected whenever the user wants it. However, most men whose penises are bent refuse to seek the treatment that is within easy reach and would rather take their chances with the kindness of women. Peyronie’s disease is a condition named after Francois de la Peyronie, surgeon to Louis XIV of France, who was the first man to describe a treatment in 1743. While the cause of this disease is not well understood, its mechanism is perfectly clear. The “tunica albuginea” is the tough layer of connective tissue that contains the sponge-like Corpora Cavernosa. For reasons unknown, scar tissue begins to form in the “tunica albuginea”, which prevents the normal expansion of the penis during erections and, in time, bends the penis to one side or the other. The fully natural way of straightening the penis is to use penis exercises. Penis fitness programs offer exercises that can break the scar tissue down and help reverse the curve. The Jelq is one such penis exercise that has been successfully used to address this problem. Another good way of dealing with a curved penis is to use a traction device. The constant pull of the traction device is bound to loosen up the “tunica albuginea” and straighten the penis. Actually, your best bet is to try both of these two penis straightening techniques at the same time. This will speed up the healing process, although you have to realize that no miracle is going to happen over night. The scar tissue took a long time to form and is not going away fast. What you need is patience and persistence, the two tools that will take you to your goal. Exercise and wear the traction device everyday and you will see the bend disappearing little by little.
