As we gain weight, these cells become enlarged and the number of glucose receptor sites decreases so that ever less glucose can be received and used by the cells. Without sufficient insulin to carry it into the cells where it can be used for energy, or without available receptor sites, glucose accumulates in the blood until some of the surplus is eliminated by the kidneys and passed off in the urine.
